Getting a Card

Anyone with acceptable identification who lives, works, or attends school in Irving or the surrounding area may get an Irving Public Library Card.

You are responsible for all items checked out on your card. Please report a lost or stolen card immediately to avoid being charged for items you did not check out. Please inform the library of any change of address or phone number.

Use your card at all Irving Public Library locations.

Loan Periods and Limits

The first time you use your card, you may check out any five items. When those items are returned (after a 24-hour minimum), you may check out up to 25 items.

Videos, DVDs, and items in high demand, such as bestsellers, check out for 10 days. All other items check out for 21 days.

Some materials are limited as to how many you may check out at one time:

Renewing Materials

If items are not overdue or on hold for another customer, they may be renewed for an additional 21 days, with a maximum of three renewals. Videos and DVDs may be renewed for one additional ten-day period.

Renew items online from our catalog page, or via TeleCirc 24 hours a day at (972) 721-2580.

Returning Materials

After-hours book drops are available at all Irving Public Libraries. The Central Library has a separate outside return for videos and DVDs.

Due to the fragile nature of their packaging, all other audio, video, and CD-ROM materials must be returned to the checkout desk during regular library hours.

Placing a Hold

If the item you want is not available on the shelf at the library you are using, you may place a hold on the item. If the item is available at another branch, it will be sent to the branch of your choice, usually within a couple of days. If all copies are checked out, you will be placed on the holds list to receive a copy when one is available. You may have up to 10 items on hold at one time. Holds may be placed in person, by phone, or using the library’s online catalog.

The library will notify you when the item is ready to be picked up.

Cardholder Responsibility

The registered cardholder is responsible for all materials borrowed on the card and agrees to abide by all library policies in effect. Call the Central Library at (972) 721-2440 to promptly report a lost card or changes in address/phone information.

The card is the property of the Irving Public Library.

Fines and Fees

The Irving Public Library does not charge fines for overdue materials.

However, patrons with overdue items can not check out more materials until their library record is clear. The library contracts with a collection agency to recover materials that are not returned. If all charges are not cleared within 120 days, the collection agency may report this uncollected debt to national credit reporting agencies. Accounts sent to the collection agency are charged a handling fee, which the cardholder must pay to clear the account, even if the items are returned.

Payments for lost and damaged materials may be made by cash, check, or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or Discover). No refunds may be issued after 60 days.

WebCard

The Irving Public Library WebCard is designed for online users who do not already have a library card. It will allow you to place hold requests on materials from our catalog before you have visited a library location, in addition to allowing access to various databases that are limited to IPL card holders.

The WebCard expires after 90 days. It does not allow you to check out materials. To do so, you must visit the library and complete the registration process in person (identification may be required).

Corporate Card

Corporations and businesses in the City of Irving are eligible to apply for a Corporate Card from the Irving Public Library. This enables representatives from the company or business to borrow library materials from the Irving Public Library on behalf of the company.

To apply for a Corporate Card, a request must be made on company letterhead and mailed or faxed to the Irving Public Library along with the completed application.
