Ms. Mature Irving Pageant

Meet our 2013 Ms. Mature Irving: Virginia Gordon

A true fan of Irving, Virginia decided to participate in the Ms. Mature pageant because she wanted to spread the word about what a great city Irving is.  Born in Pecos Texas, (that’s right, Judge Roy Bean country!) Virginia has made her home here and believes it’s a “great city with fantastic people”.  She considers raising a wonderful family, being a certified chaplain, and surviving being a caregiver to 2 family members simultaneously among her greatest achievements.  She says her life experience have given her an understanding, empathy, and love of people.

Virginia believes the best way to serve your community is with is with an open heart, open ears, and hands that are ready to serve.  Her hobbies include reading, traveling, Genealogy,  and serving as an Ambassador at DFW International Airport.

What is the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant?

Every autumn the Heritage Senior Center sponsors its Ms. Mature Irving Pageant. Ms. Mature Irving is a pageant for women age 60 and older. The pageant consists of three categories: Personality, Talent, and Eveningwear. We have always enjoyed terrific community support from city officials, area merchants, and civic groups.

The event's goal is to create greater awareness of the worth of Irving's senior women, and also to promote a positive image of our seniors. We would be honored to have ladies from organizations all over the City of Irving, to participate in this year’s pageant. There will be some work, but rest assured that there is also fun.

RegistrationThe registration deadline is 5 p.m. July 8, but we can accept contestants after that time if they can attend rehearsals. Rehearsals will be held Monday evenings at Heritage Senior Center, 6 p.m., 200 S. Jefferson, beginning July 15, at 6 p.m. The 2013 pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 4 at the Irving Arts Center. If you would like to know more about the pageant, or about Heritage Senior Center please contact Pat Davenport, at (972) 721-2496.  You can also fax me at (972)721-3744, or e-mail me at: pdavenport@cityofirving.org

A History of Ms. Mature Irving Pageant
Linda Spencer and Cindy Jones founded the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant in 1982. The first pageant was held at the senior center. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Bill Thompson served as the emcee. The idea caught on, and a great institution was born! For the next year 1983 the pageant moved to the Buena Vista Theater (now known as the Theater In The Commons) and was held there for the next six years. The Irving Arts Center opened in 1990, and the Carpenter Theater there has been home to the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant since. Many exciting things have happened during the run of the pageant. In 1990 for example we had to use the stage set that was being used for the Mrs. America Pageant. The largest part of this set involved a huge set of stairs, which our ladies navigated beautifully! One contestant, Vivian Martin-Kleinwachter was performing a roller-skating routine as her talent. She descended the stairs on her roller skates! Another example of the marvelous things that have happened at the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant was the performance at the 1992 of a young girl singer from the Johnny High Music Revue. Her name was Leanne Rimes!

Based on the example of the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant, many other senior pageants have come to life. Pageants in San Angelo, San Antonio, Abilene, and Corpus Christi have been founded, as well as the state pageant itself. Our representatives have performed admirably, winning the state pageant in 1991 (Vivian Kleinwachter) and winning the talent competition in the national pageant (Vivian again, with her roller-skating). We celebrate 26 years of honoring senior ladies. All of the Ms. Matures have been examples of what is best in senior women. These lovely ladies are vital members of the community with a lot to contribute. It is our hope that we will continue showcasing them throughout the twenty-first Century and beyond.
