If my sign permit is denied, can I file a variance?

Yes. There is a variance process, provided the sign has not been installed already. The variance process can take 6 to 8 weeks and the fee is $750. Packets may be obtained from the Planning and Inspections Department at City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd.

Can I install my own sign or do I have to hire a sign company?

You must hire a sign company per the new sign ordinance. Only sign contractors that are registered with the City may install signs.

Is the Sign Company or Contractor required to be bonded?

Yes. Each Sign Contractor is required to provide a $5,000 bond to the City of Irving or $300,000 of insurance

If I am installing a lighted sign, is a separate electrical permit required?

A separate permit is required only if the registered sign contractor does not have a licensed electrician on staff to do the work.  Otherwise, the electrician they hire will have to apply for a separate electrical permit.

Is a permit required when changing the sign face on an existing sign?

Yes, any changes to an existing sign require a permit. Minor repairs and maintenance do not require a permit.

Can I increase the height or size of an existing sign?

In most cases, this will not be allowable. The only time this might be permitted is when the existing sign, once increased in size and height would meet the requirements of the existing ordinance, including height, size and setback.

Are there restrictions on garage sale signs?

Yes, temporary signs may be placed on the side of the road beginning Friday at noon and must be removed before the following Monday at noon. The signs may not exceed 2.5 feet in overall height and not more than 4 square feet in overall size. Signs may not be placed along any of the highways, service roads, or in the medians. One sign may be placed in your yard and 4 additional signs may be placed off-premise.

Does Irving allow pole signs?

Yes, but only if the business is located on IH 635, Loop 12, SH 114, and SH 183. Convenience stores, regardless of their location, may not have a pole sign.  (This changed on 1-8-09 with the new sign ordinance.)

No, painted or attached roof signs are not allowed.

How can I get a copy of the sign ordinance?
