ABOUT THE BOOK THIEF
This year, we have selected The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, which has won numerous awards and was adapted into a major motion picture in 2013. It is an amazing story set during the Second World War about a young orphan girl, Liesel Meminger, whose connection to literature is so strong, she loved books before she could even read them. She grows up in a German town populated with beautifully written characters who struggle to survive, overcome their demons and come to terms with the war and Nazi rule:
  • Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Liesel’s foster parents
  • Rudy Steiner, Liesel’s best friend who has a not-so-secret crush on the girl
  • Max Vandenburg, a Jewish boxer Liesel’s family hides from the authorities
  • Ilsa Hermann, the mayor’s wife who lets Liesel into her personal library
