Looking for a Speaker?

In an effort to promote environmental stewardship, the Office of Environmental Stewardship would like to offer you these eco-friendly topics.  Each topic is an hour in duration, including Question and Answer session.  As each presentation is in PowerPoint form, the organization must be willing to accommodate space for a screen and projector.  The speaker should be contacted at least two weeks in advance of the requested presentation date to allow for appropriate planning.

Topic: Backyard Composting
Summary: Compost is a nutrient rich material, which is used to amend poor soil.  This presentation focuses on making compost using two primary means – hot and cold.  Participants will learn about the tools, timeand materials needed to build a properly functioning compost pile. The presentation also includes a discussion about worm composting in relationship to handling food waste.

Topic: Hobby Beekeeping
Summary: A bee travels an average of 1,600 round trips in order to produce one ounce of honey; up to 6 miles per trip. To produce 2 pounds of honey, bees travel a distance equal to 4 times around the earth.  This presentation will provide more insight into the life and important work of the honey bee as well as information about how to become a beekeeper including costs, equipment, setup, hive location, time commitment and resources.

Topic: Energy Conservation Techniques
Summary: We generally know basic ways to conserve energy – turn off the lights when you leave the room.  However, there are many more and simple ways to conserve energy.  This presentation will provide tips on how to save energy as well as how to conduct a “do-it-yourself” energy audit to help detect problem areas, along with some simple solutions.

Topic:  Air Quality – Indoors and Outdoors
Summary: What is NOx?  Or, VOCs?  What is ozone and how does it affect me?  How am I contributing to air pollution?  This presentation will help individuals better understand ozone and how each person can contribute to the problem, but also be the solution to the pollution.  Discussion will include alternative transportation suggestions and resources the learn more about the latest technology in vehicle transportation.

Topic:  Alternatives To Household Cleaners
Summary: We know that exposure to toxic chemicals can lead to health problems. Unfortunately, some toxic chemicals are found where they’re least expected- in common, cleaning products.  This presentation will provide participants with information about chemical cleaners and matching alternative cleaner recipes.  Recipes will be provided to each attendee.
